Spring 2006 Strategic Systems Programs:
America's Seaborne Deterrent
The Sailors
The end result of Strategic Systems Programs' efforts is the deployment of weapons systems aboard submarines manned by the U.S. Navy's greatest asset: its Sailors. Submarine crews are made up of the highest caliber personnel who are specially recruited, screened, and trained to operate and maintain the cutting edge technology of the submarines and the missiles. After training in various schools at Groton, Connecticut, Kings Bay, Georgia, and Bangor, Washington, these Sailors are ready to join the elite community who wear the breast insignia of the Submarine Force. Unlike most Navy ships, fleet ballistic missile submarines each have two crews, the Blue and the Gold, of some 150 officer and enlisted Sailors each. While one crew takes its boat on patrol, remaining submerged for months at a time, the other works at the submarine's homeport to train new crewmembers, to conduct refresher and advanced training, and to prepare to return to sea. With one crew standing ready to relieve the watch, these submarines can spend most of their time on station, ready to defend America.
