The U.S. Navy Memorial pays tribute to every man and woman who has served or will ever serve in the United States Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. Within the Naval Heritage Center, the Navy Log Room stands out as an essential and meaningful element in this tribute. The Navy Log, as it is currently configured, is an interactive computerized database including a quarter of a million Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine personnel. These veterans were enrolled by themselves, or by friends, shipmates, or relatives, through a donation to the Navy Memorial Foundation.

This Lost At Sea project will add a new and vital dimension to the existing Log. Because so many naval personnel have been lost at sea in their service to our country, and because this circumstance leaves descendants and friends without a central location to visit in commemoration of the veteran's service and sacrifice, we believe it especially appropriate to recognize these heroes at the U.S. Navy Memorial and in the Naval Heritage Center. Their names will be entered in a database that is associated with the existing Log and will be accessible in the Naval Heritage Center as a separate menu selection, and via the internet.

The Navy Memorial Foundation is completing "Phase One" of the Lost at Sea Project by first publishing the initial list of service member names collected from various sources. A continuous process of verifying, compiling historical data and updating records will take place over the next year and updates will be processed continuously.

"Phase Two" of the Lost At Sea project will involve creating a photo collection of Navy, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine ships lost during war time. Users will be able to obtain concise data on a serviceman killed in action with an embedded photo of the service member's ship. Compilation of this information will be ongoing with monthly updates over the next year. This information will be made available through the Memorial's Naval Heritage Center and website as a tribute to the men and women who were lost at sea.

A charitable non-profit organization, the United States Navy Memorial Foundation was founded in 1977 by naval, civic and national leaders to perpetuate and honor the best of what the Navy and sister sea services represents -- its heritage, values and traditions. The Foundation is the only broad-based national organization devoted to education based on core naval values, and to paying tribute to all sea services veterans and their families. World War II naval hero and three-time Chief of Naval Operations, the late Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, USN (Ret.) served as the inspiration for the effort.
