The Lone Sailor© - Waterloo, Iowa

A replica of The Lone Sailor© statue was dedicated on November 2, 2003 in Waterloo. The statue is located outside the entrance of the Grout Museum of History & Science.

The statue is a tribute to the five Sullivan brothers killed on USS Juneau in World War II. Waterloo was the Sullivans' hometown. The museum contains exhibits honoring the family. In 2006 a new Sullivan Brothers Veterans Museum will be added to the current museum and The Lone Sailor© statue will be moved to that entrance. The Iowa Lone Sailor was funded by a single bequest from Navy Chief Petty Officer Melvin Juel. His was the single largest bequest given to the museum and the only Lone Sailor that is funded by bequest
